How to make money as a blogger

There are many ways to make money from your writing skills besides publishing a book. One of such ways is creating a blog of your own. In this post, I will walk you through the steps of how to own a blog of your own and make income from it. But first,

                              WHAT IS A BLOG?

A blog is a website or part of a site that contains regularly-updated content about one or multiple topics. The term is short for “web log,” which means to log information on a website. The content on a blog usually comes in the form of articles on individual web pages called blog posts. The article you’re reading is one such example. A blogger is the individual who writes up these contents and manages the blog.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BLOG AND A WEBSITE?

A blog works to present new content periodically, while a regular site provides static information about a person, a group, or a subject. i.e a blog is updated at regular intervals(twice a month, once a week etc) while a website would remain the same for several months(or years) until the need to update the information on it arises.

Now that you know what a blog is, how do you become a blogger? To become a blogger, you need to create relevant content on your preferred niche.

Simply put, a niche is generally an area of interest you wish to focus on. Your preferred niche could be as a result of your passion or your professional background. For the sake of this post, we are going to make use of writing as the preferred niche. Writing in itself is quite broad, so you would have to narrow it down to your target audience.

Are you targeting other authors? You could *blog about the do's and dont's of writing a book. *Ideas on how to write a scene. *Give advice based on your personal experiences as an author, a freelancer, an editor, a publisher etc.

If your interest lay in attracting readers and not authors, try creating a book review blog. You could post about what books you are reading and your thoughts on them.

Really, the options are limitless and depends on your goal. It is also important that you should only pick and focus on one particular interest at a time. If you are just starting out, it could be akin to shooting yourself in the leg if you create several blogs on different areas and try to create content on them at the same time.

Now that you know what a blog is and have decided on your niche, how do you make money from blogging? You can't ask your readers for money just to read your posts now, can you? Well, here are three proven ways you can earn money from sharing your passion with the world;

Method 1:

Offering up your services: If you have any service you can render, you can create a blog about it. Are you a ghost or content writer? Do you edit, proofread or make amazing graphics?

  • Create a blog post about content writers for beginners(or whatever it is you do).
  • Give out a free course/ebook that will be available once interested readers join your newsletter.
  • After getting subscribers, you need to communicate with them regularly. Not so often you're beginning to spam their inboxes or so rarely that they have forgotten about you. (Twice a month or once a week is best;not too often and not too sparse) what you share with your subscribers is up to you. It could be updates about your latest post, your past experiences, anything that builds their trust in you.
  • Once you have your subscribers, you can offer online courses for a certain fee.

Method 2

Google Ads: There are times when you click on a website to read some information and ads show up. Remember those? Sometimes the ads can be intrusive but that's how many website owners get paid. You can also get paid that way too. Embed an AdSense code into your website and get paid from every single person who visits your website!

How to embed google ads on your website? If you are on blogger, all you have to do is create an account with Google adsense and add your blogging url into the sites option.

If you are using a website other than AdSense, you will have to copy the HTML code from AdSense, then you paste it into your website and voila, you can start making money each time someone clicks on the ad.

Create an account with Google adsense HERE.

Method 3

Affiliate marketing: This is another way to make money from blogging. After picking a niche, find a company that sells or offer services on your particular niche and you get paid for every single visitor who buys a product from them.

For example; if you are a review blogger, all you have to do is create an account with a company that sells books e.g Amazon, smashwords, rakuten, Barnes and Noble just to mention a few, then you are given a unique link that you post in your website (it could be a banner ad or pictures of books) and when visitors click on those ads to buy the product (in this case books) the company you are affiliated with will pay you a certain amount.

Now that you know what blogging is and how to make money from it, how do you own a blogging site of your own? You can use either WordPress or blogger. Both of them lets you use a customized domain or let you create a subdomain of your own.

Blogger  : is owned by Google and has several templates that you can choose from to create a professional looking website in minutes. You don't have to be an expert to create and manage your own website with blogger.

WordPress : WordPress is free for anyone to download and use to build any kind of website without any restrictions. It comes with thousands of designs and addons which allow you to create any kind of website you can think of.
